Last April 28 2015, we celebrate the “World day for Safety and Health at Work”, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The event aims to raise awareness of the importance of occupational health and safety, and build a culture of prevention on the workplace. The activity also reminds us that prevention is the best cure for workplace incidents.
Why Oh why?
According to studies, more than 2.3 million people pass away each year as a result of work-related activities and about 300 million people sustain non-fatal accidents (based from ILO). The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is significant, both for the employers and the wider economy, resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absences and rising insurance premiums. Many of these incidents can be prevented with the right processes and standards in place.
To combat the problem, ISO is now developing a new standard – ISO 45001.
ISO Certified Company will make you safer at work.
ISO 45001 is the new standard set for occupational health and safety. This will provide the requirements that will help organizations in implementing management system and framework to improve employee safety, reduce the risk of harm and ill health to employees and to create better, safer working conditions.
The standard is being developed by a team of occupational health and safety experts, and expected to follow other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
Who is it for?
ISO 45001 is intended for use by any organization, regardless of its size, and nature of its work. It can be integrated into other health and safety programs such as worker wellness and wellbeing.
As of this day, the standard is in the 2nd committee stage (CD2) and the expected publication will be on October 2016.
Let’s all be safe at our working areas. It is better if our company will be certified by this standard once it is published. Truly an ISO certified company is making a difference, from the food we eat up to our safety.
